The Maclehose Trail (麥理浩徑), a 100 kilometer trail that spans across the entire new territories (新界) in Hong Kong, Named after Sir Murray Macklehose, the governor of Hong Kong in the 1970s, was renowned across the world for its beauty and diversity. Throughout the entire trail, you could see a variety of tropical plants, birds and insects, not to mention the ocean view and the beach.
Maclehose trail is known for being home for a diverse range of flora and fauna. Contributed by its diverse habitats, from lowland forests to upland ridges. Lush secondary forests dominate the landscape, featuring native trees like the Chinese Red Pine, Camphor Tree, and the protected Incense Tree (Aquilaria sinensis), prized for its aromatic resin. Bamboo groves line shaded paths along the side of mountains, shading passer-by and provide refuge for smaller animals, while higher elevations and beaches host hardy shrubs and grasses. Streamside areas burst with ferns, mosses, and seasonal wildflowers, including vibrant orchids like the Hong Kong Lily and Geodorum. The Maclehose trail is home to many protected plant species, so please, keep them in your memory, not your hand.
The trail's fauna is equally rich, with over 200 bird species recorded, such as the melodious Chinese Bulbul, Crested Myna, and soaring Black Kite. Mammals include nocturnal civets, porcupines, wild boars, and occasional sightings of the critically endangered Chinese Pangolin (Which, looks kind of like a mix between an armadillo and an anteater). Reptiles like the Hong Kong Newt inhabit forest floors. Oh, it would be a pity if I don't point out that Maclehose trail is also a heaven for snake spotters, with the right guide and know where to find, the trail wouldn't disappoint you (And please don't be afraid, as long as you remain in safe boundaries of the trail, the risks of snakebites are infinitesimal) And don't forget to look up either! Butterflies, including the striking Swallowtail. Though many species are elusive due to nocturnal habits or rarity, the trail underscores Hong Kong's biodiversity, blending common wildlife with protected species in a dynamic, conservational landscape for everyone to enjoy.
